Narragansett Turkey Tom
The Narragansett turkey is a turkey descended from a cross between European turkeys, probably the Norfolk Black brought to the colonies in the early 1600's, and crossed with the Eastern wild turkeys. They got their name from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. The colors in this bird contain black, tan, gray, and white. It is similar to the bronze, but with gray, black and white replacing the bronze pattern. It is also a sex-linked bird which means, if you breed a Bronze hen to a Narragansett tom, all of the toms would be Bronze and the hens would be Narragansett. This has always been a very popular variety. The Narragansett was added to the APA Standard in 1874. This is a true breeding variety. The mature weights of these birds is 33 lbs. for toms and 18 lbs. for the hens.
